With collaborative efforts with Arup engineers, I proposed a double layer facade for the service areas of the EcoCity development in Hamburg, Germany. The towers comprised of many small VAWTs (vertical axis wind turbines) to generate wind energy. The system is applicable to the service areas of the towers, but also as ground level barriers and an energy sculpture garden.
Because of the amorphous shape of this power generation system, there is potential for this system to grow along a natural curve or a landscape pattern. In addition, a zero carbon footprint development such as EcoCity demands many unsightly service areas. This facade system can add interest to those plain facades, and generate energy from otherwise unused vertical spaces of the site.
